Tally Youngblood

Tally Youngblood, the main protagonist, is an 'ugly' who has almost turned sixteen and is almost allowed to turn pretty, as most 'uglies' do. However, unlike other uglies, she finds herself in a situation where she must betray her best friend Shay to get the operation to become pretty after Shay opened up a new world where people could be free from 'ugly' and 'pretty' ways of thinking, but then left.
By choosing the path of betraying Shay, Tally showed that she wasn't willing to give up being pretty (and joining one of her pretty friends in the pretty town), even if it cost her one of the greatest friendships in her life. This advanced the story further, as Tally was forced to find Shay, causing her further hardships and opening up new plot devices.
