Scarlet Shooting Devastates Speak Journalist
A Nigerian mother of two (name unknown) has been shot at the gates of her family home. It is said that she was shielding her own husband, Speak journalist Folarin Solaja, a brave target of Nigeria's military dictators. Solaja writes for weekly newspaper Speak (written in English), whose staff have recently been moving their offices from place to place to avoid being caught and shut down by the police.
Other Speak journalists and staff may be targeted along with their families, and more tragedies like this may occur.
Before and after the death of Ken Saro-Wiwa (a famous Nigerian writer who was hanged by the government for protesting against them), the Solaja family received many death threats, which were ignored either bravely or foolishly.
A doctor's report indicates that the bullets entered straight into Mrs Solaja's heart, leaving her with no chance of survival.
Although this heartbreaking incident has occured, it is said that Mr Solaja will continue to write and defy Nigeria's military dictators.
The Solaja family's current location is unknown.
